We believe that our village of Portreath and its immediate surrounds, situated on the north-west coast, is one of the most spectacular beauty spots in the county. Portreath nestles in a valley between high cliffs and has a secluded, sandy beach which is ideal for the family and for the more energetic water sports enthusiasts.
Before 1760 Portreath was very small – farming at Rose Villa farm, tin streaming along the red river, small scale mining along North Cliffs and fishing. A small quay had been built at Amy’s side to serve these interests and the remains of what could have been fish cellars at Smugglers cottage probably date to this period.
We have 6 unique character apartments sleeping from 2 to 7. Tastefully designed with comfort in mind. Set in an acre of sub tropical gardens, with barbecues & picnic areas, and surrounded by stunning National Trust countryside. We are but a few minutes stroll to a beautiful Sandy Beach, historic harbour, shops, inns & restaurants.
To the rear of the house is a magnificent old Cornish garden, the product of a century and a half of dedicated care and which, after a period of neglect, is being lovingly restored by the resident proprietors, who have owned Bassets Acre since the summer of 1978.
A stream, rising from a natural spring, runs through the garden. Beneath the trees is a patio with a barbecue and a fish pond. Fifty steps lead from here to a pergola, almost at the same height as the ancient pines, with panoramic views over the valley.
The sandy beach is popular with families and like most beaches on the north Cornish coast, is popular with surfers and bodyboarders. The beach is cleaned daily during the season and dogs are not allowed on it from Easter to 1st October each year.
